H.G. Fortune specializes in specific synths able to produce all kind of ambient, texture, pad, space, fx sounds. Currently, three Pro versions of nearly forgotten gems are available as freeware: ProtoPlasm Pro, Shuniji Pro, and LaserBlade Pro.
It's just a one patch from Yamaha DX21 synth: "Solid Bass". It does have a nice sound, there are 241 samples which means each key from C#0 to F#6 and some variations.DX21 is actually a cheaper version of the DX7: it has less polyphony and fewer operators , no velocity sensitivity at all, from effects it has only chorus, and it doesn’t even have a reverberator. But some of these flaws might actually be its advantages. For example, the Yamaha DX21 owes it’s unique charm to the 14 bit DA converters that give it a harsh, vintage character, while the imperfect output path give the timbre it’s characteristic lo-fi hiss. The bass sounds great, and the sound effects are insane.
Fuzzpilz Oatmeal is actually one of the best freeware synths available. It offers plenty of free soundbanks, ability to draw own waveform shape and it's low CPU consuming. 
Another compressor unit but this one introduces an ability to morph between soft-knee compression and waveshaping. It also provides pre-/post- emphasis filtering (similar to side-chain filter) and analog-like attack / release filter which is inspired (but not modeled) by an SSL buss compressor.
