Synthline Brzoza FM Synth

Brzoza is quite interesting 2 operator, 6 modulator synth (each operator has 3 modulators). This freebie has been reviewed in Beat Magazine and is designed to create a wide range of sounds from simple leads and bass patches to more complex evolving textures. Overall, it’s good to see another, interesting FM Synth. I mean, sure it’s not NI FM8 but it’s free and clean UI invites to program some presets 🙂

Venom VB-303 synth

Venom VB-303 virtual synth is an emulation of legendary Roland TB-303. An author of this project, Anton Lyubenov Savov aka Antto, decided, after 4 years of development, to finally release this freebie 🙂 If you haven’t explored TB-303, acid sounds in your productions, feel free to try this baby 😉 or take a look at some other TB-303 emulations / recreations.

I am interested in using a 303, not because it emulates a bass guitar, but because of that special unique sound that comes out of it.
Ive been trying to recreate this sound for 10 years, i know its a single oscillator thru a resonant filter, but no matter what i did – something wasnt quite right.
Ive been trying to understand – WHY is it so hard to make this sound on my own? What makes it so special?
It took me 4 years to get to here, and now i think i can see the answer.

ps. It’s been a while since last update 🙂

Density mkIII Compressor

Somehow, this plugin went off my radar 😉 Density mkIII is a versatile stereo bus compressor. The latest (well, it was released during 2012 holiday 🙂 ) mkIII version brings many changes and improvements.

During the last two years or so Ive received quite a lot of feedback to the Density mkII release mostly coming from mastering engineers on how to improve its dynamic response towards todays mastering needs. Some very early efforts did not made it but with the learnings from the ThrillseekerLA compressor design and the emerging stateful saturation approach everything was possible, all of a sudden.

The mkIII version of this compressor introduces quite a lot and deep optimizations of the compressor engine especially but not limited for its use in audio mastering situations. The transient response is spot on now over the entire spectrum and it creates sonic depth and dimension: It renders audio like a three-dimensional image. This feature is very much supported by stateful saturation, which is also included now and appears on the stage as a brand new developed VCA color model and can be dialed in to taste.

With Density mkIII not only transients are managed in a musical and mastering grade fashion it also renders a three-dimensional audio image, which truly supports perceived depth and dimension.

If you’re not sure about the quality of this plugin – read comments on official website 🙂

TSE X50 – Guitar Amp

The X50, developed by TSE Audio, is a digital emulation of a Peavey 5150 – an all-tube guitar amplifier made by Peavey Electronics. Because two almost similar amps were made, both red channels are modeled. The green channel is modeled after the first make. An author states that “you can’t go wrong with this amp for metal!”.

Well, I visited YouTube and came into this (great track btw):

ps. This plugin is a beerware 🙂 If you like it – support the author by buying him a beer (paypal).

Thrillseeker XTC – Free Exciter Unit

Thrillseeker XTC is a contemporary exciter unit build around a true parallel analog style equalizer design. ThrillseekerXTC is all about adding weight, vibe and attitude back to the sound. It delivers all the character of an analog signal path and provides what digital processing usually is hard pushed to, including a rich low-end experience and that vibrant ‘expensive’ top-end.

Looks like Bootsie did it again. Another great plugin – it is a winner of KVR Developers Challenge 2012 – the fourth free-for-all audio plug-in / audio application / soundware design event.

AXP SoftAmp 3OD – free Vacuum Triode Stage simulator

I guess, it would be the best to just quote AXP SoftAmp 3OD plugin description:

A single triode stage circuit typical for guitar preamps is captured in this plugin. The model engine is based on a system of non-linear ODEs. Some smart calculation techniques are used to reduce the computational load.

This effect could be used to apply mild tube overdrive to add some presence to your tracks, or you could chain a couple of instances together for a full-blown high-gain overdrive. You may want to throw in some EQ as well to better shape the signal and use a poweramp/speaker simulater afterwards.

The model has 3 core controls to configure the circuit:
– 3 different triode models: 12AX7, 12AU7, 12AT7.
– 3 different plate voltages: 150v, 250v, 350v.
– 3 different cathode capacitors: 0.47uF, 1uF, 22uF.

What do I think about it ? Well, I spent some time with AXP SoftAmp 3OD. At first, I ran Kontakt 5 (Christmas present … bought to myself ;d ), selected some nice guitar, turned on AXP SoftAMP 3OD and … loved it. While I’m not a guitarist, I can still hear 😉 if some plugin makes the things sound “nice” (in a good way) 🙂 This freebie sounds so … gentle, subtle or maybe I should say pro 🙂

I really like when some freebie excels my expectations. AXP SoftAmp 3OD is a great example.

Digits – Phase Distortion Synth

Digits is not another “real vintage true analog emulation synth” 😉 It’s a phase distortion virtual synth inspired by Casio’s CZ line. It comes with over 50 presets which include some basses, leads, pseudo-realistic instruments, phat pads and gritty sweeps. The interface is minimal and designed to enable the user to create sounds from scratch in record time.

Overall, it’s like I said – it’s not another subtractive synth. It’s simple, it’s quite unique (i guess, you won’t create there some latest pop / dance presets 😉 ) and available for Mac as well as Windows 32/64 bit. Audio demo below:

Tokyo Dawn Labs Proximity

Proximity is a collaborative effort by Tokyo Dawn Labs and Vladg Sound (ie. Molot compressor). The idea behind Proximity is to give mixing engineer a reliable tool which allows him to manipulate the depth of several sound source in a straight forward and convincing manner.
Several models can be combined: Distance signal delay by speed of sound, Distance gain loss, Absorption of high-frequencies in air, Stereo width manipulation, Proximity effect of virtual microphone, Distance based early reflections.

Proximity reached 2nd place in overall category for the KVR Developer Challenge 2012, free-for-all audio plug-in / audio application / soundware design event, and 1st place in Mac category. Such great result speaks for itself 🙂

Full Bucket’s Frequency Shifter Vst

Full Bucket Music offers some great freebies such as The deputy Mark II (String Machine) or the blooo (polyphonic synth). But this time it’s about the Frequency Shifter. It shifts the spectrum of the input signal up or down along the frequency axis. This effect is also known as “Bode Frequency Shifting” or “Single Sideband Modulation”.
Do not confuse the Frequency Shifter with a pitch shifter! A pitch shifter multiplies all frequencies of the input signal by a constant factor while a frequency shifter adds (or subtracts) a constant amount of Hertz to (or from) those frequencies. Thus, the harmonic structure of the input signal will not be preserved in the modulated signal, resulting in a raw, inharmonic, metallic, you-name-it sound the more you apply the effect. Even more, if you mix a slightly shifted signal with the original input signal you will get some uncommon phasing sound.

Limiter 6

I’m sure you do remember Molot – great freeware compressor unit, straight from Russia. Vladislav, an author of this plugin, released some time ago, Limiter 6 – another great freebie – limiter unit. It contains the following modules, connected in series: slow RMS dynamic range compressor (RMS compressor), fast audio peaks limiter (peak limiter), high frequency audio content limiter (HF limiter), the clipper, true audio peak limiter (ISP limiter).
